DRIVERS EDUCATION CLASSES

Register for one of our Drivers Education Courses as soon as you turn fifteen years of age or at any age! Drivers Education is required for 15 & 16. We can give the Knowledge Test (Beginner’s Permit). Just ask!

Students may take Drivers Education with or without a permit. Class begins at 8:00 am and ends at 4:30 pm.

We can administer the Beginners Permit Test.

We teach students to drive defensively and safely from the onset. We work hard to teach and show every student what it takes to take their SC driving test with confidence!  We want students  to develop good decision making skills, develop advanced observation skills, and excel at driving for years of safe driving.

*We require practice in between driving sessions. The more you practice, the better driver you become.

Teenagers need their parent’s help in getting drive time.  We know it can be a bit scary but it will only get better with practice.

You are responsible for your own transportation to class and back home.   We do offer pick-up and drop-off for most of our students when the  behind -the-wheel instruction begins, however, some students are required to meet at certain locations such as JI Driving School, located on James Island, Burger King on 17 South, or from some local schools.

*If you are under the age of 18 bring a parent or guardian for the registration process. Parents do not have to stay for class. If you are 18 or older a parent or guardian is not required. If you have a permit, please bring it with you to class.

*Students will need approximately $10-$15 for the lunch period and breaks. Students may bring their lunch.  We are within walking distance of Bojangles La Hacienda (for take out) Baguette Magic (take out).  By majority vote, Chic Fil A, or Pizza may be an option.  Students will have two fifteen minute breaks during the day.

The driving test is not Included in the courses listed below. Please SCROLL down to read more about the driving test.

WE GIVE ONE-ON-ONE DRIVING INSTRUCTION SEVEN DAYS A WEEK.

Rain will not delay class instruction. Rain can cause delays in the driving schedules for some or all drivers. Some scheduled driving sessions may have to be cancelled and rescheduled per the DMV’S requirements.  Please understand that several students will be affected and the following week will probably be pre-scheduled.

Please also remember that when school is in session,  students have sports, and after school activities. When fall arrives the sun sets a lot earlier in the day and this limits driving times.

The Basic Drivers Ed Course consists of one eight hour class and six hours of one-0n-one driving instruction behind the wheel.  The student will have three two-hour driving sessions. This is the minimum state requirement for drivers education and this is required  for 15 & 16.

The Preferred Drivers Ed Course consists of one eight hour class and eight hours of one-on-one  driving instruction behind the wheel. (two additional hours of driving instruction.) The American Driver Training and Safety Education Association (ADTSEA) minimum recommendation.

The Preferred Plus Drivers Ed Course consists of one eight hour class and ten hours of one-on-one  driving instruction behind the wheel. (four additional hours of driving instruction). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) minimum recommendation.

SCDMV Approved DRIVING TEST

Students are required to have their permit for six months. Students are not eligible per the DMV to take their skills (driving) test until six months and one day  (181 days).

We do REQUIRE 48 hour advance notification if a scheduled test needs to be postponed or cancelled due to no fault of our own and weather permitting. You will be charged a $25  last minute cancellation fee for test only.

You have the option to take the SCDMV driving test with our school (fees apply) or you may go to your nearest DMV. (testing fees do not apply).

*Minors MUST have their parent or Guardian with them throughout the process. If you are not the parent or Guardian you cannot sign for a minor.

* Please allow an hour of your time for the driving test between the required documents and the actual driving test.

*The parent and student are responsible to make sure the registration and car insurance is current for their vehicle if using their car for the driving test.

We do not guarantee anyone will pass the driving test, it is solely based on their individual ability to be successful. Students after successful completion of the driving test will be given paperwork to take to the highway department to have their license produced. The highway dept. does have the right to randomly retest any student from any private driving school.

**DO NOT PAY PRIOR TO SPEAKING TO A REPRESENTATIVE for use of one of our vehicles for testing. Contact us!

*If you choose to use your vehicle for your driving test at James Island Driving School the fee is $50. If you choose to use one of our vehicles for the test it is $100.

If Saturday is not a good day for you to attend a class perhaps because of religion, etc. and you can get at least five students, we would be happy to consider adding a class on a different day of the week.
